                        Turtles

Turtles are reptiles. They are cold-blooded, so they need sunlight to keep them warm and active.

Turtles have a hard shell on their back. This protects them from their enemies. Some turtles even hide their heads inside their shells if they are being attacked!

Turtles lay their eggs on land. Some turtles lay their eggs in sand, they leave the eggs to hatch on their own. When they hatch, the baby turtles scramble down into the water. They have to be quick so that they don’t get eaten by larger animals.

Most turtles eat plants that grow in the water. Some turtles also like to eat meat. These turtles eat small insects, snails and worms.

Many species of turtles are endangered, which means they are at risk of becoming extinct. Humans must work to protect these beautiful creatures for future generations.

Distinguish Text-Types According to Purpose and Features: Classification

What you have previously read is an example of a text. 

A text is a piece of writing that you read or create.

The type or the characteristics of a text are very important in understanding what is it for and what meaning does the writer wanted to convey. It is easier to select the main ideas from certain types of texts, as the narrative ones (texts “telling a story”) then from others, such as expository texts (texts “speaking about”).

The type of text depends on its purpose, structure and language features.

In this lesson, the introduction of the text about turtles is an example of a factual text.

Unlike the literary text which purpose is to entertain or elicit emotional response by using language to create mental images, a factual text informs, instructs or persuades by giving facts and information.

A specific factual text which classifies, describes and gives factual information about people, animals, things or phenomena is called an informational report. It begins with a general classification or definition, then lists a sequence of related information about the topic and ends with a concluding comment.
